On
Sunday, Secretary of State John Kerry delivered a moving eulogy to honor
the first American diplomat to be killed on duty since the Sept. 11
Benghazi attacks. 25-year-old Anne Smedinghoff, a U.S. Foreign Service
Worker in Afghanistan, was killed in an explosion Saturday on her way to
donate books to a school in Qalat. “We know too well the risks in the
world today for all of our State Department personnel at home and around
the world,” said Kerry. Three American soldiers and another American civilian were also killed in the incident—the deadliest Afghan attack on Americans to date. In a statement on Twitter, Smedinghoff’s parents paid tribute to their “Annie,” saying America had “lost a truly beautiful soul.”
