Gunman in upstate New York for gunman who killed four people & wounded two more cornered by cops

Police in rural Herkimer County are in a standoff Kurt Myers, 64, who was armed with a 'long rifle.' Gunfire erupted at barbershop & car wash. State police Superintendant Joseph D'Amico said making sure no one else is hurt is their top priority as the standoff continued into the night.

Mohawk police have identified the man suspected of fatally shooting four people and wounding two others as 64-year-old Kurt Myers of Mohawk. Police have not yet apprehended Myers. State police expect to hold a news conference at the Herkimer barracks within the hour. Gov. Andrew Cuomo and State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico will be in attendance, police said.

A gunman wanted for killing four people and wounding two others was cornered Wednesday afternoon in upstate New York and cops were trying to talk him into surrendering.
Kurt Myers, who was holed up in a building in downtown Herkimer, reportedly rebuffed the first orders to give up with gunfire.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, right, was on the scene in Herkimer, N.Y. as authorities were looking for 64-year-old Kurt Myers. Officials say guns and ammunition were found inside his Mohawk apartment after emergency crews were sent to a fire there Wednesday morning.  

So police closed off W. Main St. and evacuated the businesses around a restaurant called Glory Days Food and Spirits, where Myers was reportedly hiding.
"We're in no rush to bring this to a conclusion," said state police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico, adding that their main objective was to make sure no one else was hurt.

Myers, 64, of nearby Mohawk, had managed to escape the SWAT teams earlier, when he was hiding a few doors down from the restaurant in a Herkimer jewelry store.
Police said Myers was “armed and extremely dangerous” and were determined to not let him slip out of their clutches again.

While the standoff was playing out, Gov. Cuomo and state D'Amico headed for the troopers’ barracks in Herkimer and schools across the rural county remained on lockdown.
“Everybody’s on lockdown, all the schools, the college, the village,” said Amanda Viscomi, the town clerk of Herkimer, which is about 65 miles east of Syracuse. “It’s very, very scary.”

Police said Myers used a “long gun” when he opened fire on a barbershop around the corner from his Mohawk home and then at a car wash a mile away in Herkimer.

“I think this guy is trying to prove a point,” he said. “It definitely seems like he knew what he was doing.”
The violence started shortly after 9:30 a.m., when the white-bearded suspect allegedly set fire to the apartment building where he lived in Mohawk, police said.

From there, Myers moved on to the barbershop where he allegedly killed two people and wounded two others.
Then, police said, Myers raced over to the car wash in Herkimer, where he killed two more people — and ditched his red Jeep Cherokee.
Police did not release the names of the dead.
Officers were later seen removing about a half-dozen long guns from Myers’ building.
